The full story

the problem…

Since the start of May 2020, over 10,000 bags of rice and foods have been donated to the Burmese people here on Koh Phangan, Thailand. Covid has struck the island drastically, where 80% of the income relied on tourism alone.

Most of the Burmese people worked in the hotels and construction. So without this income, there are little choices left. Thanks to your need support and life-saving help, we were able to distribute the foods to the local villages here on Koh Phangan. However, due to the dire circumstances of the pandemic, the Burmese are in a more desperate situation than ever and are still without foods and basic supplies.

As you can see from the video, they live a simple life, in the jungle, in small wooden bungalows.

Despite their situation these village people are genuinely the most sweetest and kindest people you can meet.

THE campaign - No Hungry Human

There was a huge problem, with many families struggling to live; this was when NO HUNGRY HUMAN (NHH) was created (initially called ‘The Rice Challenge”) in May 2020.

With the help of friends and family of BVT; donations were given in order to buy food and supplies.

The original target was 1000 bags of rice, hence the name - The Rice Challenge, however the project has grown exponentially, due to the huge love and support of the BVT family.

Now over 10,000 bags of rice have been given out and continuing with the new campaign - No Hungry Human.

NHH NEW initiatives

The idea with the No Hungry Human is to provide the Burmese with the skillset for a sustainable, long term plan with their future, not only hand-to-mouth from the food drive.

So the first project is the create a community garden.

With the 3 main initiatives of NHH:

  • Self sufficient

  • Education

  • Empowering

Stage 1 of NHH - Sponsored Community Garden

Run by the Burmese, to service the Burmese.

  • Providing the land and facilities for the Burmese people to be self sufficient.

  • The produce from this can be shared around the village, and also sold onto the local markets, provide a source of income.

  • Using the farming skillset that they have

  • Education Centre and Eco-Tourism - Providing knowledge of a healthy lifestyle by teaching methods; of permaculture and how to grow organically, without chemicals.

  • Advertising of brands onsite, for additional income

Stage 2 of NHH - Teaching skills

Stage 2 requires a method of teaching necessary business skills such as: English language, management, accounting, etc.

One idea to facilitate these skills is via a fruit shop from the produce gained from their community garden.

We have hired Ko to start the construction of the fruit shop and Min is to help manage the shop once up and running.

Timeline

The plan of the fruit shop is to be open at the start of July 2022.

And the land for the farm to be secured and seeds in the ground at the same time.

Stay tuned for more progress.
